night flight
“Night Flight” explores the moment between wakefulness and sleep. It’s a moment of opposites; tumbling and soaring, letting go and taking off, as the conscious mind surrenders to dreams. This series aims to capture the magic of that in-between space, where two states of being coexist, full of wonder and possibility.
I carved and cast stylised human figures before passing them through a jeweller’s rolling mill, to thin and distort the original shapes. This technique gives the pieces a light, free, fluid quality and it gives me the freedom to make each design a little different. The graphic aesthetic of the figures combined with little stars recall the charm of a children’s picture book, tying back to bedtime rituals.
The choice of silver, gold, and black colours in combination with matt and shiny surfaces, evokes the transition between night and day, emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow that defines this fleeting, transitional state.
